Plant rice at home

Based on the research by Khazanah Research Institute, rice is a staple food for Malaysians in consuming 80kg of rice per person. Although Malaysia is a net rice importer but still manage to provide 70% of rice to the country. However, the primary issue is the slow release of new paddy varieties. In an updated 2018 list by MARDI, only 3639 varieties were released.

Learning to grow rice at home is the first way to let people understand that planting rice takes months and appreciate farmers' hard work. Parents can educate children on the importance of rice and reduce food wastage. I started to plant rice in June, seeing the paddy grows make me excited. Paddy grows well with enough amount of water and sunlight. Re-study back my thesis details drawing of rooftop paddy planter area. I also understand and learn rooftop paddy planting cool down the building interior and allow paddy to have better sunlight. Still, I need to consider the structural design of the rooftop that can withstand the heavy load of rainwater.

As a future architect, I believe this thesis is not the ending of exploration between urban development and agriculture plantation. Still, it is the starting of a real-life journey to improve and determine the appropriate design consideration to make a sustainable paddy plantation all year round with rainwater harvesting in an urban area.
