Improve Current People Housing Open Spaces to encourage Social Interaction

People's Housing Project

The People's Housing Project (PPR) is a government program to resettle squatters and provide housing requirements for low-income earners. Where reviewing current social issue to improve people’s housing a better living space. Therefore, safety become one of the most priority in low cost housing. Based on research of sustainable issues in low cost housing, most of the respondents felt that satisfaction on safety is just fair or poor. The research on case study on PPR Low cost flats in Kuala Lumpur shows the degree satisfaction of safety is the lowest while the degree importance of safety is the highest.

As the site contexts have various height from 4 sides, the concept of design an affordable housing open space is like a terrace garden which to maximize interaction and green spaces in a limited site yet improve and encourage social interaction in people housing project. In the same time, the idea is intend to keep pedestrian away from vehicular road and also car parking. The open interaction among residents and spaces create a safer residential environment.

Based on research of defensible spaces by Oscar Newman, an uncategorized big open space will cause garbage dumping or a place for improper activities. To increase the proprietary feelings of residents, there are subdividing much of public grounds into different zones for different age of users. The sectional perspective explained idea of terrace garden from first floor link bridge, going through the interaction staircase to adult healthy lifestyle park, teenagers exploration garden and children playground. The building form is like a safety barrier for residents to have daily activities. This has maximize residents green spaces in a limited site , more green and interaction spaces need to be consider towards future housing projects.
